The course

La Salle Campus Barcelona - Ramon Llull University

From January to November, 2024.

The New Technologies course from the Crazy about Science programme of the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation is a course developed by La Salle Campus Barcelona - Ramon Llull University aimed at 1st year A-Level students with a scientific and technological vocation who have special interest and talent in the world of new technologies, in particular ICT.

The aim of this course is to promote the technological and innovative spirit among 1st year A-Level students, which will allow them to come into contact with technological advances in the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) sector, and help them see firsthand what an engineer is doing in sectors such as Web Development and Programming, Mobile Application Development, People Service Robotics, Internet and Cybersecurity Technologies and Video Games; areas of activity with great development in the coming years and with a deficit of professionals throughout Europe.

There will be classes in 5 different areas but with a common thread such as New Technologies. One of the expected results of these courses is to increase the vocation, technological and innovative motivation among young students, in order to respond to the current need of ICT engineers, and at the same time to awaken the entrepreneurial spirit of these students.

The course will be held on different Saturdays from January to November 2024 at the facilities of La Salle Campus Barcelona - Ramon Llull University.

Registration for the Crazy about New Technologies course will be open from 12th September to 20th October 2024 and among all those enrolled 25 students will be selected from the 1st year of A-Levels who will participate.

The course will cover the following areas:

  • Web Development and Programming
  • Mobile Application Development
  • Robotics serving people
  • Internet Technologies and Cybersecurity
  • How to create a video game
Specific objectives

Academic studies

  • To foster among young people the scientific vocations linked to the world of advances and new technologies in the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) sector, helping to guide their academic and professional future.
  • It provides the opportunity for your A-Level Research Project to be tutored by a leading research centre.

Research

  • Bringing students closer to research. At La Salle R&D we are committed to giving our research areas a clearly interdisciplinary and very practical approach through the development of cutting-edge technologies.
  • Discover the operation of the research centres linked to:
    • INTERNET AND STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES: We design new generation networks for the Internet of the Future, Fog Computing and the Internet of Things. These are concepts that enable the implementation of new, customised, hybrid cloud-based communication architectures with cybersecurity as well as highly scalable storage systems.
    • MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES: We carry out research in order to achieve the seamless, natural interaction between humans, machines and their environment, taking into account aspects such as acoustics and signal processing. In addition, we study how to improve user experiences through gamification.
    • ROBOTICS, COMMUNICATIONS AND DATA ANALYSIS: We carry out research projects in the field of social robotics aimed towards education and therapy. We work on the electronic design of long-distance communication systems in accordance with electromagnetic regulation and carry out data analysis based on the information collected by these systems.

Sessions 2024

Module 1. Web creation and programming

Date: Saturdays 20th and 27th January, and 3rd and 10th February, 2024.

Opening hours: 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Location: La Salle Campus Barcelona Carrer de Quatre Camins, 30 Barcelona.

Session coordination: Miriam Caro and Daniel Amo.

Session by: Daniel Amo.

Language: catalan / spanish / english.

The students will design their own web page, using design programs that allow them to get an idea of what the final result of the activity will be. After the simulation is over, they will learn how to build and shape the web page from scratch, using today's tools and programming languages. Finally, when they have finished the web page, they will show it to the world, making it public and learn to find out how successful it is, how many people access it and how to promote it.

Module 2. Design and development of mobile applications

Date: Saturdays 2nd, 9th and 16th March, 2024.

Opening hours: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Location: La Salle Campus Barcelona Carrer de Quatre Camins, 30 Barcelona.

Coordination of the session: Miriam Caro and Pol Muñoz.

Session by: Pol Muñoz.

Language: catalan / spanish / english.

Development of mobile applications where you will learn to use graphic design tools to shape students' ideas and design an application; and you will see what the design looks like.

At the end of the design, the student will learn the basic programming structures to make the buttons, images and other graphic elements do what he wants, and make the designed application work. To finish, they will install and be able to test the developed application.

Module 3. Motion Capture

Date: Saturdays 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th May, 2024.

Opening hours: 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Location: La Salle Campus Barcelona Carrer de Quatre Camins, 30 Barcelona.

Session coordination: Miriam Caro and Alba Llauró.

Session by: Alba Llauró.

Language: catalan / spanish / english.

Creation of a video where students learn about screenwriting and narrative. They use professional cameras to make the recordings, apply chroma to the proposal and add fictional characters using the motion capture system.

Module 4. Robotics at the service of people

Date: Saturday 28th September, and 5th, 19th and 26th October, 2024.

Opening hours: 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Location: La Salle Campus Barcelona Carrer de Quatre Camins, 30 Barcelona.

Session coordination: Miriam Caro and Selene Caro.

Session by: Selene Caro.

Language: catalan / spanish / english.

After the establishment of Industrial Robotics in our industries, Service Robotics is entering our daily life, be it vacuum cleaner robots, telepresence robots, autonomous unmanned vehicles that distribute products in a warehouse, robots who act as a guide, etc. In the Robotics Workshop, an autonomous robot will be used as a basis for programming. More specifically:

1. We will see what we mean by a robot, what characteristics they must have, what a service robot is and what a care robot is. We will design our autonomous robot, using 3D modeling tools. We will see different platforms for doing 3D modeling and we will end up teaching how the program works to print it on a printer.

2. We will see how the robot can move, types of sensors that exist and how they work. So, we will program all the sensors and movement of the robot, so that it is a teleoperated robot.

3. We will learn how important the interaction between human and robot is, while developing an Alexa skill so that the robot can communicate with the person via voice.

4. We will learn how a robot does autonomous navigation, while talking about artificial intelligence. Therefore, from point 2, where the robot will be controlled by us, we will see how the robot will move autonomously.

Module 5. ITSec

Date: Saturdays 9th, 16th and 23th November, 2024.

Opening hours: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Location: La Salle Campus Barcelona Carrer de Quatre Camins, 30 Barcelona.

Coordination of the session: Miriam Caro and Adrià Mallorquí.

Session by: Adrià Mallorquí.

Language: catalan / spanish / english.

To know the technology that makes today's Internet possible, how networks work, and to learn how Hackers work, so that students take appropriate measures for their own safety and make students aware of the danger posed by improper use of new technologies.

These sessions aim to teach young students to be alert and critical, to be able to develop internet research skills, to awaken their curiosity and to know how to use the internet constructively.
