Forests of the Future

We want to contribute to the adaptation to climate change within the forests of Catalonia, which is why we promote innovative projects in the field of forest management that reduce the risk of forest fires and allow for the development of circular bioeconomy models, such as bioconstruction with wood and the generation of jobs with social value.

To protect our forests, we must engage in adaptive forest management by reducing tree densities and making them more resistant to fire and drought.

The Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation develops adaptive forest management strategies close to nature in our forests (6,000 ha), reducing the risk of fire and supporting the forest in the response to new climatic conditions, by developing viable models of forest bioeconomy that generate forestry jobs with the highest level of social value.

Fuel biomass reduction

Continuing with the experience developed in the LIFE Montserrat project (2014-2019), fuel biomass needs to be reduced in the planned strategic sectors in Mediterranean forests, by maintaining a landscape mosaic with open spaces while being richer in biodiversity, through clearing and silvopasture.

Adaptation to climate change

Forests are subjected to increasingly hot and dry climatic conditions and must adapt quickly. Adaptive forest management can help speed up this process and favour more resilient forest landscapes: mosaics of fields and open areas, spaces with larger trees, etc. This guarantees the survival of the forest and the services they provide us, such as biodiversity, the landscape, biomass for heating or wood for bioconstruction and, at the same time, maintaining soils as carbon sinks and increasing rainwater flow in the headwaters of rivers and in river sources.

Bioconstruction and the circular economy

Generation of forest products and jobs

The forest management necessary for the prevention of fires and the adaptation of the forests also generates forestry jobs and some jobs in rural areas that are so really essential. The Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation works to develop working models that provide maximum social value, just as we already do with organic farming, and collaborating with other companies and entities in the sector. Derived forest products are mainly chips for heating biomass and we are also working to produce quality wood for bioconstruction and sustainable architecture in the future.
