What is Youth for Medicine?
It is a course aimed at 1st and 2nd year baccalaureate interested in degrees related to medicine. The main objective is for the students to get to know up close how to work in a hospital from assistance to research. They will be able to get a taste of how different diseases are diagnosed and treated, and what research is being carried out to better understand them and find more effective treatments to combat them.
The program consists of 18 theoretical/practical sessions on different Saturdays, which take place between the months of November 2026 and May 2027. In these sessions, the different services and specialties that exist within a hospital are discussed, based on the face-to-face visit to the different leading hospitals in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. Among others they will treat different specialties: pediatrics, neurosciences, cancer or mental illness. They will learn the functions of different organs and will approach surgery.
How does the Youth for Medicine program work?
The Youth for Medicine program will host a total of 162 young people interested in the world of health and medicine, who will visit the main most important hospitals in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
Participants will form 6 groups . The formation of these smaller groups has been sought to be able to offer training of the highest quality, and to facilitate the visits to the different areas of the hospital centers.
Each group will rotate through the different hospitals, therefore, each group will start the course in a different hospital and end in another.
During the program, the participants of the different groups will not coincide in the same Health Centers, all the groups will carry out the sessions simultaneously at the different participating hospitals.

L’Hospital Vall d’Hebron està format per l’Hospital General, l’Hospital de Traumatologia, Rehabilitació i Cremats, l’Hospital Infantil i l’Hospital de la Dona. És el major grup hospitalari terciari i multiespecialitzat de Catalunya i un dels més grans de l’Estat espanyol. S’ofereix atenció sanitària d’alta complexitat des del naixement fins a la vellesa. Anualment s’atenen uns 7.000 pacients al dia, unes 210.000 urgències a l’any, 30.000 intervencions quirúrgiques i fins a 650.000 visites a consultes externes. Disposa de 1.100 llits i fins a 119 especialitats mèdiques.
És un campus sanitari de referència que comprèn tots els camps de la salut: l'assistència, la recerca, la docència i la gestió. El Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus és la suma de cinc entitats: Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron, Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR), Vall d’Hebron Institut d’Oncologia (VHIO), Centre d’Esclerosi Múltiple de Catalunya (CemCat) i la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
The Germans Trias i Pujol Institute for Health Science Research (IGTP) is a public research centre located in Badalona (Barcelonès) whose main objective is to increase scientific knowledge and use it to provide better health and patient care in the community. The Institute is affiliated with one of the largest teaching hospitals in the Barcelona area: Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol (HUGTP). It is also part of the Can Ruti biomedical campus. The institute is a CERCA centre and a member of the Biocluster supported and supervised by the Government of Catalonia. It is also accredited as a centre of excellence by the Carlos III Institute and is therefore responsible for coordinating campus scientific research, working in close collaboration with the other centres located there.
Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge (HUB) opened its doors in 1972 in Hospitalet de Llobregat. Together with Hospital de Viladecans and the Costa de Ponent primary health care centres, the hospital is part of the southern Metropolitan management area of the Catalan Health Institute (ICS). It is one of the 5 hospitals in Catalonia accredited as a third level hospital: offering the highest level of care. It covers all the medical specialities except paediatrics and obstetrics. It is a leading centre for transplants, imaging, heart surgery, digestive and thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology and psychiatry. It is the community referral hospital for 343,172 members of the population of Hospitalet de Llobregat and El Prat de Llobregat. In addition, it is a leading centre for processes involving the latest technology for over 2 million inhabitants of the following districts: South Barcelona Metropolitan Area, Camp de Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre. For over 25 years, the Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge has been a university teaching centre linked to the University of Barcelona, where it offers courses in medicine, nursing, dentistry and podiatry. The hospital is a leading international research centre and forms part of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), one of the only centres accredited with the highest level of research granted by the Carlos III Health Institute at the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The infrastructural resources available are: 31 operating rooms 204 outpatient clinics (including doctors surgeries) 1 clinical laboratory 52 pieces of high-tech equipment, including those managed by the Diagnostic Image Institute (IDI) and the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) 742 beds and 1 international health unit.
