The Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera and La Vanguardia have announced the 14th edition of the Vanguardia de la Ciència award, which recognizes outstanding research projects led by women scientists. The aim of the award is to give visibility to their work and help reduce the gender gap in scientific research.
The award is open to research in which the principal investigator or first author is a woman scientist with primary affiliation to a research institution based in Spain and published between January 1 and December 31, 2024.
An evaluation committee, made up of experts in research and scientific communication, will select eight finalists, taking into account the scientific relevance and social impact of the research. Starting May 25, 2025, La Vanguardia readers will be able to vote for the three winning research projects, which will be announced on June 29, 2025.
In the previous edition, readers voted for three groundbreaking research projects as winners:
A breakthrough in improving treatment for childhood cancer, carried out by Marta Alonso and Iker Ausejo, from the Clínica Universidad de Navarra.
The discovery that breast milk promotes heart development in babies, research conducted at the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) by Mercedes Ricote and Ana Paredes.
The discovery of fugitive stars in the Milky Way, in a study led by Mar Carretero, from the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB).
