Today, April 28, Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera participated in an event organized by Google at its headquarters in Madrid to present several cases of use of artificial intelligence with a positive social impact.
In this context, the Foundation is part of one of the three stories selected to exemplify how technology can contribute to improving people's lives. The case presented focuses on Manel, a person with Alzheimer's and participant in the Foundation's Memory Reinforcement program, and on how artificial intelligence can become a support tool in therapies for people with early Alzheimer's.
Technology at the service of memory and identity
The project presented is part of the Synthetic Memories initiative, developed by Domestic Data Streamers, and seeks to create images of latent memories that were not documented. For this reason, the team has collaborated with care organizations such as the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, integrating this tool into reminiscence therapy sessions.
In the video presented, we see how, based on oral descriptions, and using image-generating artificial intelligence —such as Gemini technology—, the team reconstructs visual representations of Manel's past. He can see and validate them on a screen before printing them, turning them into a valuable resource for cognitive and emotional stimulation sessions. In this way, technology is put at the service of memory, helping to recover fragments of identity, preserve the personal legacy and generate a sense of connection, recognition and well-being in the patient.
This process allows for the connection to one's own life story to be strengthened, stimulating memory and generating emotional well-being, contributing to preserving the person's identity beyond cognitive impairment.
Artificial intelligence with social impact
The event, which included a round table with the protagonists of the different cases, also presented other examples of the use of artificial intelligence in areas such as personal autonomy or the preservation of life stories.
These projects highlight that the value of technology is not only found in its technical capacity, but in its potential to improve people's daily lives, generate connection and give voice to stories that deserve to be told.
An innovative look at supporting Alzheimer’s
Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera supports people with early Alzheimer's and other dementias through its Memory Reinforcement program, with the aim of improving quality of life and maintaining cognitive abilities and autonomy for as long as possible.
Participation in this event reflects the Foundation's desire to explore new tools that can complement therapeutic programs, always from an ethical and person-centered perspective.
Because, beyond technology, what matters is to continue putting the person, their story and their dignity at the center.
