Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation drives scientific vocation among over 300 baccalaureate students
Today, the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation launched its “Bojos per la Ciència”(Mad about Science) programme, bringing 314 baccalaureate students from all over Catalonia into 17 of the top research centres in the country. This programme, which 2,772 students have taken part in since 2013, aims to promote scientific talent and encourage students to go into science, technology and research.
For the inauguration, over 800 students, families and researchers taking part in this initiative gathered at Món Sant Benet. The young people chosen for the programme will have the chance to work alongside renowned researchers, developing scientific disciplines and using cutting-edge techniques at prestigious Catalan research centres.
The areas of knowledge this edition focuses on include: bioengineering, biomedicine, biochemistry, economics, energy, physics, artificial intelligence, mathematics, new technology, nutrition, chemistry, sustainability and supercomputing. So, the students will get to take part in thirteen different courses, in collaboration with 17 of the country’s top research centres.
Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation General Director Marta Lacambra welcomed the new participants and their families, highlighting the foundation’s commitment to promoting scientific talent and helping improve society. The inaugural event also featured past Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation fellows, who shared their experience with this initiative that had an impact on their careers in science.
The day also included a master class by astrophysicist Mónica Seglar-Arroyo, a postdoc researcher at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IFAE) who specialises in gravitational waves and gamma rays. Seglar-Arroyo encouraged the participants to make the most of this one-of-a-kind opportunity.
With this initiative, the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation is reaffirming its commitment to fostering scientific talent and enriching the education of young students, helping create future professionals who are committed to advancing research and innovation in Catalonia.
