Applications have opened today for the Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge (BIYSC), organised by the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera. Since the creation of BIYSC, more than 900 students have taken part in the programme, and 2026 will mark its 10th edition – a milestone that will make this a particularly special year.
BIYSC is a unique programme designed to foster scientific talent among secondary school students from around the world who have a passion for science and technology. The 10th Edition will take place from 6 to 17 July 2026 in Barcelona, a city with a scientific ecosystem of international relevance. More than 150 selected participants will have the opportunity to work on real research projects in collaboration with active researchers at leading research centres across the country.
Agenda and Application Process
First application period: from 2 December 2025 to 10 February 2026.
Second application period: from 11 February to 9 April 2026 (only for projects with available places).
A diverse and inspiring scientific programme
BIYSC will include 17 research projects covering areas such as:
Biosciences: research on leukaemia, planarian stem cells, trauma neurobiology, decoding tumourigenesis, and molecular genetic improvement.
Medicine: cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, and medical experience.
Physics: astrophysics and cosmic rays, cryptography, and quantum physics.
Mathematics and computational sciences: advanced mathematical research and supercomputing for the cities of the future.
Chemistry: innovation in photochemistry and drug synthesis.
Engineering: nanosatellite design and acoustic engineering.
In addition, students will have the opportunity to take part in lectures, debates, and networking sessions, as well as to present their research work during the closing ceremony.
With its practical and immersive approach, BIYSC not only inspires new generations of scientists but also strengthens interest in scientific and technological careers.
